Earth Day 2010
The Expeditors family celebrated Earth Day 2010 in a variety of meaningful and innovative ways, and is continuing to do so throughout the year. From Bike to Work month to planting new trees for varying offices across the globe, hundreds of Expeditors employees began creating a greener and brighter future for our environment.
"Earth Day started 40 years ago and has grown into an international celebration of the environment. It's a time to think about what we can do to reduce pollution and take care of our planet."
- Dan Wall, Senior Vice President, Ocean and Cargo Management Services
Below are a few examples of how our offices around the globe organized and executed this international celebration in a way that complements our global strategic initiatives. For more information on our global strategic initiatives, check out Expeditors' Environmental Strategy
- Some of the Latin American branches succeeded in conquering ideas from their region's Green Teams:
- Gave employees small plants
- Placed green labels on computer monitors as recycling reminders
- Wore green and arranged best dressed competitions
- Gave employees mugs to reduce usage of disposable cups
- Further communicated "going green" ideas to all employees
- Earth Day was also a proud day for the employees at the Montreal, Quebec, Canada branch, who received a Certificate of Environmental Accomplishment documenting that 100 trees were saved from their efforts of paper reduction through recycling and shredding.
- Office employees at Expeditors Ankara, Turkey made a difference by planting young trees in a field facing their office building. Country Trainer, Elif Ozsan reported, "At the end of the day, we all felt good about ourselves for doing something for the environment."
- Some other Green notables:
- During May's Bike to Work month, 6 teams from Expeditors' Corporate Office (43 participants) logged over 12,000 kms (7,500 miles) in over 500 round trips!
- Expeditors Detroit was awarded the Commercial Sustainable Energy Program of the Year by DTE Energy and the Engineering Society of Detroit. Congratulations!
- Expeditors Phoenix completed their Level 1 Paper Reduction certification and is now working on Level 2.
- The Expeditors Corporate Marketing Department has been diligently working with their print vendor to come up with a recycled paper option for all of their print items that reflects the same quality while maintaining cost efficiency. In fact, the current version of Expeditors Global Sales Brochure will be printed on 30% post consumer recycled paper.
Thanks again to all who participated in Earth Day events at work, at home, and in your community. By keeping up on all of our green actions and efforts throughout the year, we will continue to make a difference in creating a greener environment.
